There's More Than One Option in Networking

Author: Joe Bingham

There are so many 'typical' affiliate programs online, I don't think everyone realizes there ARE many options as far as what kind of network marketing you can become involved with. So, in order to give you more possibilities to think about, I'm going to relate to you some of the choices you do have and get you thinking about what type of business will best suit you. I'm not going to make any claims as to which type of business I think is best, you're welcome to ask me that on your own if you like, however. I'm just going to describe the options for you and let you decide. As I list the different options, keep in mind which ones interest you and then search for those best suited to what you want. There are so many companies, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to find the ones that contain all the aspects you like. PRODUCTS There are plenty of stories about the old type of network marketing where you had to have a garage full of products in order to get started in the business. That's not true anymore thanks mostly to the Internet. Today, you can still deal in physical products but rather than stockpile them, you simply keep a few for your own use or for exhibit and then just order from the company when a customer is ready to buy. You can even just keep a catalog on hand and not have to maintain an inventory. With the speed of ordering online or over the phone, this is a simple option giving you less overhead expenses when dealing with physical products. As well, you can now join network marketing businesses that sell only digital or virtual goods. These constitute information businesses where the end products being sold are all online information products or memberships to web sites full of information. INVESTMENT You can literally find network marketing opportunities at any level of required investment that you like. There are those that cost in the thousands to join, but pay in the thousands when you get referrals, and there are free to join affiliate programs that pay you to help them sell products and service. STRUCTURE Some network marketing opportunities require you to work with your downline and others don't. Some expect you to become a leader and work with those you sponsor. Others have systems set up to where you never even really know who the people you refer to the company are. OFFLINE OR ONLINE Network marketing has been around longer than the Internet has. You can join programs and work completely offline. You can also work completely online, or any combination of the two that you want. CUSTOMERS In some businesses, all you do is refer customers to a web site and then let the site do the work of convincing them to buy. Other businesses require you to work directly with your customers on a one on one basis. Again, you can hit anything in between there also. You could refer people to a site and then choose to do some personal contacting as well. BUILDING A DOWNLINE Most network marketing opportunities will require you to sponsor your own downline. In fact, that's all a lot of them want out of you anyway. However, there are some that do extra marketing on their own and will help you build a downline. Some, if you're willing to make the initial investment, will make you a profitable downline over time without you doing a bit of work on your own. However, you can still work on recruiting as well and grow faster. Hopefully, if all you've been exposed to is a typical Internet affiliate program, you can now see there are other options. At this point, stop and consider just exactly what you would be willing to put into a program and exactly what you expect out of one. Then, keep these options in mind as you go searching for the right company for you.

Confessions of a Recovering MLM Junkie

Author: Bill Nieporte

According to a new survey carried out by Alliance & where ID_NUM=9270; Leicester, one in five small business owners view tax as their greatest concern. The Chancellor has announced in his last budget that companies with profits below œ10,000 will not have to pay any corporation tax with effect from 1 April 2002. The question to be asked is: does that announcement make incorporation a more attractive option compared to being a sole trader?

The answer is that from a tax point of view, it is advantageous to trade through a limited company as long as the income is drawn from the company by the owners as dividends from their shares and the amount of dividends drawn is restricted below the 40% band rate (i.e. œ31,063 for tax year 2002/03). That way, the owners have no further personal tax (""income tax"") to pay. Moreover, dividends are not subject to national insurance contributions. This is excellent news of course. But, if dividend income falls within the higher rate bracket of income tax (i.e. above œ34,515), they will be taxed at 22.5% on the excess, which of course will increase the tax burden. The company profits are subject to corporation tax rates. Those are lower than income tax rates.

The most catastrophic scenario is when the director takes his reward from the company as salary. Then his/her salary is taxed at income tax rates (like a sole trader's income). That is because, unlike sole traders, the tax system treats companies as separate from their owners because a company is a separate legal entity. The problem is that the income taxes are higher than corporation tax rates. On top of that, they will be subject to employee and employer national insurance contributions, which of course increase the tax burden and render his position worse than even an unincorporated business (""sole trader""), because NIC Class 1 on payroll are higher than NIC Class 2 paid by self employed.

In contrast, a self employed person (""sole trader"") is taxed at income tax rates on the profits from his business, which are added to his other sources of income. As it has already been mentioned, income tax rates are overall higher than corporation tax rates. On top of income tax, national insurance contributions class 4 are payable on the business profits within a specified band (7% on profits between œ4,615and œ30,420). National insurance contributions Class 2 are also paid by self-employed people, although those are lower than those payable by company directors on their salaries.

To illustrate the above, let's take a simple example. We have a limited company and a sole trader. They both make œ60,000 profits each in the tax year 2002/03. We assume that the company director takes a salary equal to the amount of his personal allowances (untaxed income) of œ4,615 and the balance as dividends. The company will pay corporation tax at 19% equal to œ10,523 and nothing else. The sole trader will pay income tax œ16,542, National insurance Class 2 œ104 and National insurance Class 4 œ1,806. Total œ18,452. The bottom line is that the person that has incorporated his business into a limited company will make a tax saving of œ7,929 compared to a sole trader! Isn't that fantastic?

Somebody might be wondering: why is this entire happening? The official explanation is that, this government, to help the economy grow, encourages people to leave as much profits within their businesses to be reinvested, instead of being taken out and spent.

The ""unofficial line"" is that, as a matter of fact, for years the Inland Revenue has tried to reclassify the self-employed. The 1% in NIC hike on staff salaries above the NIC threshold from next April adds to both the employees' and employers' tax burden and may more than offset the saving from the corporation tax zero rate on the first œ10,000 of profits.

Aren't there any other matters to consider in deciding whether to incorporate or not?

Higher administration costs to comply with company law, payroll and bookkeeping is one factor. Another issue is pension planning. Extracting profits out of the company as dividends rather than salary means that there will be no ""net relevant earnings"" and therefore pension contributions can't be made. But the advent of stakeholder pension plans has meant that contributions up to œ3,600 per year can be made without the need for any earnings. If a person does not wish to transfer funds in existing plans into stakeholder because of high charges, there is a way out: the best net relevant earnings (i.e. salary) in five consecutive years can be used for making contributions for the next five years, even if there were no salaries in the remainder four years. It is comforting to know that entitlement to basic state pension is not affected by taking a salary from the company at the level of a person's personal allowances i.e. œ4,615.

Furthermore, an individual may decide not to bother with pension plans and instead invest in ISA. Often, these can be more efficient than pensions but that's beside the scope of this article. If that option is taken, no salary is necessary.

Another factor is business motoring. It might be tax advantageous for an unincorporated business that owns many cars not to incorporate because if these cars have some private use there will be benefits in kind taxed on the users. These are generally higher than the straight apportionment between private and business for all car running costs in the case of sole traders.

The conclusion is that there can be considerable tax savings waiting the sole trader who decides to go down the road to incorporation. But, one needs to proceed with caution and careful planning. And don't forget the biggest advantage of incorporation, which is Protection from Personal Liability. Incorporating is one of the best ways to protect a business owner from personal liability. Shareholders of a company are generally not liable for the obligations of the company. Creditors of a company may seek payment from its assets, but not the assets of the shareholders. This means that business owners may engage in business without risking their homes or other personal property.

DON'T OVERLOOK YOUR MOST PROFITABLE SOURCE OF BUSINESS

Author: Bob Leduc

A new business owner called me recently with a question I hear often. She asked, ""What can I do to build my business faster? I'm making a small profit but cannot seem to generate enough sales to make the real money in this business.""

As Karen answered some of my questions it became clear she had done a good job of targeting a niche market. She also provides a compelling reason for prospects to do business with her instead of with her competition. She was obviously effective at attracting customers because she already had over 100 of them.

In fact, she was so busy chasing down new customers she completely overlooked her existing customers as a source of additional business.

HIGHLY PROFITABLE AND EASY TO GET

Your existing customers and clients already know and trust you. It's easier for you to get more business from them than to get business from new prospects. It's also more profitable than business from new prospects because you get it without an advertising expense.

Some businesses have natural repeat sales built into their operation. For example, most MLM companies sell consumable products that periodically need replacing. And web site hosting services collect a new fee at regular intervals to keep your site up.

These replacement needs automatically generate repeat business. But how can you generate additional business from customers when it's not automatically built into your product or service?

HOW TO TURN A ONE-TIME SALE INTO REPEAT BUSINESS

To capture additional business from your existing customers you have to find or create additional products or services your customers are likely to want. Start by asking yourself what else you can offer your customers and clients to improve their lives in the same area as their original purchase.

One type of product every business can use for repeat sales is instructional material. It can be a book, videotape, audiotape, software or any combinations of them.

For example, a pet store owner I know of regularly sends her customers special postcard offers for some of the books and videotapes she stocks in her store. She sells a lot of books and tapes this way. It also generates a lot of profitable referrals from her customers.

AFFILIATE PROGRAMS

Affiliate programs are especially effective for generating repeat business from existing customers. Just announce the product or service to your customers and include your personal endorsement of the program. The affiliate program handles all aspects of the transaction and pays you a commission.

The cost of finding new customers is a big expense. Maximize your return on this expense by getting all the business you can from these customers. Create or locate other products or services you can offer them. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to get additional sales from customers -- and how much additional profit it generates for you.

How I Couldn't Sell Noah A Lifeboat.....If The Ark Was Full Of Holes

Author: Dave Cole

Folks, let's clear up some misconceptions about network marketing that have been floating around lately.

Network marketing is NOT about becoming a super salesman.

I am currently building a very large and prosperous network marketing business that is growing by leaps and bounds.

What I am NOT doing is selling.

In fact I hate selling.

One of the last things I would ever want to be is a ""salesman.""

Honestly, I doubt if I could sell Noah a lifeboat if the Ark was full of holes!

What I am is a teacher.

Network marketing is about teaching.

Teaching others to be successful. Teaching others to build their own business. Teaching others to achieve their dreams. Teaching others to teach others to be successful.

I am in the business of helping other folks make their dreams come true.

Isn't that a great way of looking at it!

The most successful folks in network marketing are those that can effectively teach people to show other folks how they too can be a success at this.

I am also a story teller.

I tell folks how the products have affected our pet's lives and our lives and how the business has affected our long term plans and finances.

I teach my distributors they are Representatives of a First Class company - NOT salespersons for it.

Walk into a Volkswagen dealership and you will find salespersons. Walk into a Jaguar dealership and you will find representatives......there's a big difference.

Can you tell other people a short story about how a particular product has positively affected your life?

Anyone can do that!

And if so, you can be a success in network marketing.

Can you follow a proven plan?

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3

I can give you that. I can give you thousands upon thousands of free leads. I can teach you how to build a business. I can teach you how to teach others to build a business.

What I cannot do is make you or force you to do it.

Some folks think network marketing is a lot of work.

I have fun doing it. Is having fun work? Every person I talk to about becoming a distributor with our team, I always ask them, ""Don't do this unless you think you can have fun with it.""

No fun = work

If your business is work, perhaps you might want to re-consider what you are doing.

If you dread making those calls or contacts, if you constantly have to force yourself to do the things necessary to build a business, then that doesn't sound like much fun to me....and it doesn't sound like you'll likely last long in that opportunity either.

Network marketing does take two things: 1. A Desire 2. A Passion

Network marketing is about Stretching - Stretching yourself to be more than you ever thought possible.

Can you use your imagination?

Network marketing is about:

Who you want to become. What level of financial freedom you desire to obtain. What you really want to do with your life.

Today's challenge is:

A. Are you ready to learn some new concepts of what being a network marketing professional really is all about?

B. Are you ready to BE all that you Really Can BE?

C. Are you ready to DO something about it?

A Marketers Minefield - Why The Fraudsters Are Targeting You.

Author: Emily Robinson

They want your talent, your network and most of all, they want your marketing capabilities. Fraud. It's the crime of the times, so what does that have to do with you? The United States continues to be plagued as the investment fraud capital of the world. Savvy network marketers and MLM'ers continue to be caught in the under currents of the investment fraudsters wave. Have no doubt in your mind – these people are pros. They are charming, charismatic, intelligent and very 'likeable'.... that is until you realize what they have done to you. Network marketers and MLM'ers are being targeted by these Pros in order to market and sell their financially appealing 'opportunities'. Investment opportunities in FOREX trades, High Yield Investments, Trading Programs, Promissory Notes and Certificates of Deposit - all ""secured"" and guaranteed"" at no risk to the potential investor. They seek the more liberated audiences, the risk takers, those on the free enterprise path, those in search of financial independence. They want you to get out there and spread the magic. So you do. I mean after all, they were offering huge commission checks, and you are not adverse to some free thinking and non-regulated investment - the commissions alone would set you and your family up for life. This is it, this is the one... the opportunity you have been waiting for. You knew that if you kept on working hard, the right opportunity would come your way. And here it is, at last... It is because you are so good at what you do that you have been targeted to play in their game. They need someone who can really sell, some worker bee's to go and generate more honey for them. Everything looks in order, they have the flashy car, the money and a $5,000 suit to match. They also say they have the contacts in the financial world that everyone wants to know. There are a multitude of ways they will drag you in, all involve substantial financial reward for you... don't be tempted. Check them out, see who they are, at the very least run a background check on them... do they come from where they say they come from? Follow up on those stories they told you, and put together the inconguencies for yourself. Keep an open mind. And most of all be prepared for their answers. They have answers, for everything. They'll tell you that you are too suspicious, 'do you know how lucky you are to be a part of this? It's only open to a select few'. If you start to bang the drum too loudly, they'll kick you out of their set-up...You're too much trouble. Being alert and listening to your instincts, those nagging doubts, can save you immeasurable heartache down the road. The reality is that these people will create a whirlwind, gather the money and disappear. They leave you to face the FBI, the civil suits, the angry investors who have lost their entire savings. You even got your parents to invest their 401k, and they lost it all... and you, well not only do you suffer the financial devastation of being looped by the con, your reputation is mud and the network you have cultivated over many years no longer trusts you. You end up in the marketers graveyard. Be alert, check them out and follow up... then confront them with your findings. Most of all, listen and really ""hear"" the answer. You are investing in yourself, and your future... don't see what you want to see - see it as it is. ©2002 The Virtual School of Investigators. All Rights Reserved. www.thevsi.com

Your Time Is Now - Network marketing soared in the 90's... and the best is yet to come

Author: Jeffrey A. Babener

Corporate America has been downsizing and job security has faded into dimly remembered history.

Statistics show that most new jobs now come from small business.

Home-based business has become a reality for millions of Americans - inspiring millions more to dream about opening one.

The term ""networking"" has become a buzzword in the business press, as more people realize the crucial role of referrals in the economy.

The Internal Revenue Service has adapted its rules (somewhat) to the new home-based economy by recognizing independent contractor status and publishing specific tax-preparation guidelines for ""direct sellers."" In Tune with the Times

There are a number of reasons why the network marketing industry reached maturity and respect in the 1990s. As millions of Americans launched home-based businesses and entrepreneurial ventures of every kind, they created a climate in which network marketing could flourish. For instance, it was not so strange anymore for an attorney to leave his practice in order to run a new company of some kind out of his den. Most people have come to know someone who dropped out of the 9-to-5 world and turned entrepreneurial. Hourly and salaried employees have become intrigued with the idea of financial freedom and economic autonomy. Suddenly, they are much more open to change - and better prospects for network marketing.

Another change that favors the networking industry has to do with sex. In the past, most direct sellers were women. As a result, this was often seen as a woman's business, which tended to discourage male recruits. But as opportunities in the industry have increased, more men have been attracted to it; in turn, the all-female perception has faded, increasing the industry's ability to attract men.

The sheer number of network marketers also has exploded. By the end of the 1990s, more than 10 million people were involved in the industry here in the U.S., racking up more than $20 billion in yearly sales. Worldwide, the number of distributors has topped 30 million, generating more than $80 billion in annual sales.

When an industry gets that big, even corporate bureaucrats begin to notice. Major multinational corporations are taking account of the networking phenomenon, building it into their own plans for distributing products and services. Here are a few of the marketing partnerships that have been formed: Avon-Mattel; Tupperware-Disney; Amway-Rubbermaid; DuPont /ConAgra-Legacy. The new ""virtual networking"" company will outsource almost all its activities: manufacturing, customer service - even accounting. One of the world's largest banks, Citigroup - formed of the merger between Citibank and Traveler's Group - has a network marketing division, Primerica Financial Services (formerly the A.L. Williams Company) that is one of the most profitable distribution channels for the corporation's many financial products. These range from insurance policies to checking accounts.

Corporate America has validated the success of the industry by embracing public offerings of network marketing companies on Wall Street. Excel Telecommunications, Amway Asia-Pacific, and Nu Skin all successfully launched initial public stock offerings on major exchanges. Herbalife, Mannatech, Market America, Nature's Sunshine, Pre-Paid Legal, and Rexall, to name a few, are also publicly traded.

In the 1990s, high-tech and financial companies became enamored of the networking industry, as network marketing companies broadened their lines to include services as well as consumer products. Soon, it seemed every high-tech company was looking to networking as a means of guerrilla distribution in competitive markets. Companies in telecommunications, paging, Internet service, satellite TV, financial, and travel services were the chief beneficiaries of alliances with networking companies. Today, even electric power is being sold by network marketing.

Why did conventional corporations cast their lot with the wild and woolly entrepreneurs of the network marketing industry?

Because they could see that it works. Specifically, network marketing distribution has several distinct advantages:

It is a powerful technique for introducing brand-new products - especially items that require demonstration or testimonials.

It generates strong ""word of mouth,"" by directly rewarding consumers for sharing their excitement about a company's products or services.

Network marketing techniques can penetrate new markets quickly.

Since commissions are only paid on actual sales and since word-of-mouth replaces costly advertising campaigns, network distribution is an efficient and economical way to market a product or service.

Going Global

As it entered whole new business categories in the 1990s, the network industry also planted its flag in dozens of new markets around the world. Amway and Nu Skin had singular successes in Japan, which proved to be as amenable to network marketing as the industry's birthplace, the U.S.A. Nu Skin pioneered global seamless sponsoring, which allows a distributor to sponsor people living anywhere in the world into one down-line organization - as long as the corporation does business in the country where the recruit lives. For many of the largest networking companies, sales outside the U.S. proved to be the majority. The Internet, global communication, and satellite TV provided the tools for global expansion.

It wasn't just Yankees who have been on the march during this decade. Many foreign-based networking companies set up shop in the U.S. One of the major success stories of the 1990s - health products giant Nikken - came to the U.S. from Fukuoka, Japan, at the beginning of the decade with virtually no American customer base. Nikken posted annual U.S. sales in the hundreds of millions by the end of the decade and established its new worldwide headquarters in California. Read All About It Finally, the decade just ending has seen a sea-change in media and public perceptions of the network marketing industry. In the 1980s, the press acknowledged the existence of network marketing - but the attention was often negative. Stories had names like ""The mess called MLM"" and ""Here come the scam artists."" Some of the abuses cited were real, but good companies were usually lumped together with bad - effectively misinforming the public about a major industry.

In recent years, this trend has begun to turn around. Positive stories on network marketing have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Inc., Success, Entrepreneur, Wealth Building, Business Startups and Home Office Computing. Articles continued to treat the industry to its dose of honest criticism, but they also began to include the positive side: the fact that millions of Americans were finding opportunity where they had never expected to see it - among their relatives, friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

Unless you have been living in a cave, you can't have missed experts' predictions that the Internet will be one of the most powerful business forces in the 21st Century. As available bandwidth increases, ever more information - and more money - will be exchanged over the Net. As a future-oriented industry, network marketing will respond, adopting the new technology enthusiastically.

The Internet will become the prime means of communication, training, and ordering for network marketing distributors. Sales kits and videos may become obsolete as sophisticated multimedia demonstrations on laptops (and over e-mail) become the main recruiting tool, and cyberspace becomes the chief venue for training. The Internet will encourage rapid expansion on a global scale with instantaneous communication between network marketing corporate headquarters and the distributor force.

Documentation, sales kits, distributor agreements, and policies and procedures will reside primarily on Web sites, where new prospects can download them. (Courts already recognize electronic signatures as binding.) Distributors will order directly from the Net, reducing the need for call centers and human operators.

Companies will pay commissions by direct deposit to bank accounts or credit card accounts. The new, ""virtual networking"" company will out-source almost all its activities: private-label manufacturing, customer service, fulfillment, graphics - even genealogy and account processing. The technology revolution will level the playing field.

But don't let all this technological razzle-dazzle distract you from the basics. Regardless of what gadgets they adopt, the network marketing companies that succeed will always be those that maintain their respect for personal relationships. Get as virtual as you like - you will always need to get out there and press the flesh.

New Viral Tactic: 'Cause Marketing'

Author: Joe Bingham

Once again, I've discovered a NEW marketing technique. We'll call it 'Cause Marketing'. It's a very simple concept really, pick out your favorite 'cause' that you can rally people behind, say for instance the fight against the use of Smart Tags. Then, you set up a Non-Profit.org web site with text running down the evils of the Smart Tags you are fighting against. In the sales copy, er, uh, I mean, text on your Non-Profit.org site, you infuriate people against the evils of big business, such as Microsoft, and against another terrible aspect of society like say Communist or Dictatorship governments that dare to censor their citizens access to parts of the Internet. Now, after really working up people against these things, you declare that you will launch a massive media campaign aimed at stopping these horrific practices. The kicker, of course, is that you need a way to collect names and email addresses from this Non-Profit.org site. One good way to do this could be to ask visitors to sign a petition. Naturally, you will deliver the petition as promised, but what you will also do is ask visitors to sign up on your marketing ezine's list at the same time they are signing the petition. Of course, you won't do this by requiring them to fill in their name and email again for the separate list, but instead you will just have two already checked boxes. The first box pertains to the petition, and the next to the subscription to your ezine. The logic being that who, after reading about how you are taking on big business, censorship, and all other manner of evil, will not want to subscribe to your ezine? Doesn't that sound like an incredible idea? Aren't you glad I am able to illustrate these new concepts for you? Of course, there is an outside chance that if you undertake this kind of 'Cause Marketing' that a cynical ezine writer will take hold of your concept and devote an entire article to making fun of you. Of course, nothing is more important than gleaning names and email addresses for your business, right? Who cares that some may view asking for people to subscribe to a marketing ezine from a Non-Profit.org site as tacky? Who cares that the only 'massive media' campaign you will be running will be to get people to your petition site so they can subscribe to your marketing ezine so you can in turn get more hits to your web site. I mean, hey, you're fighting against people that are using illicit means of gaining traffic to their web site. You are the good guy!
